The Sony TC-440 is a 4-track, 2-channel stereo tape recorder with support for reels up to 7 inches, built for serious home recording and playback use.
One of its most special features is the Roto Bi-Lateral Head system, which allows operation in both directions while maintaining consistent performance in forward and reverse.
This model features true auto reverse and bi-directional recording, making it far more advanced and unusual than most open reel decks from its period.
It also includes closed-loop dual capstan transport, servo control, and Sony’s six head function concept, providing improved tape stability, smoother handling, and more precise performance.
The TC-440 offers 3 tape speeds: 1 7/8, 3 3/4, and 7 1/2 ips, equivalent to approximately 4.8, 9.5, and 19 cm/s, giving excellent flexibility for recording time and sound quality.
Technical specifications include wow and flutter of 0.08% at 7 1/2 ips, frequency response from 20 Hz to 30 kHz at 7 1/2 ips, signal-to-noise ratio of 56 dB, and total harmonic distortion of 1.2%.
Connections and controls include line input 60 mV, microphone input 0.2 mV, line output 0.775 V, headphone output, Source/Tape monitoring, SOS/Echo function, and independent recording controls.
