Dating from the late 1970s, the XLC-1850 is the Japanese-market counterpart of the internationally known PLC-590. Pioneer originally supplied this model without a tonearm, allowing owners to select their preferred configuration. This example combines Pioneer’s precision drive system with a separately fitted SAEC arm and Fidelity Research cartridge.

The quartz PLL direct-drive system uses a brushless DC servo motor to maintain accurate rotation at both 33⅓ and 45 rpm. Published factory specifications include wow and flutter of no more than 0.025% WRMS and a signal-to-noise ratio of at least 75 dB DIN-B, reflecting the engineering quality of this ambitious design.

Quartz Lock provides precise speed control, while disengaging it allows manual pitch adjustment over a ±6% range. The distinctive illuminated indicator displays speed information, and the separate Start and Quick Stop controls provide convenient operation with electronic braking.

The substantial die-cast aluminium chassis and 320 mm aluminium platter form a solid mechanical foundation. Height-adjustable isolation feet allow accurate levelling, while the transparent hinged dust cover protects the turntable and preserves its elegant appearance.
