Clarion MD-8181A dual cassette deck, a rare and highly distinctive vintage Hi-Fi component from around 1977, designed at a time when double cassette machines were still unusual, ambitious, and beautifully engineered.
This unit has been 100% professionally restored by our specialized technical service and is working perfectly, with playback, recording, transport functions, and dubbing operations fully tested and operating correctly.
The MD-8181A is a true 4-track, 2-channel stereo dual cassette deck, combining two complete cassette mechanisms in one chassis for versatile home recording and playback use.
Both Tape 1 and Tape 2 support independent recording, and the machine also allows dubbing between both transports, making it an advanced and highly flexible deck for its period.
It also features relay recording, allowing recording to continue automatically from Tape 1 to Tape 2, a very practical function for longer recording sessions.
The deck is equipped with Dolby B noise reduction, separate bias and equalizer selectors for Tape 1 and Tape 2, source/tape monitoring, and mixing capability for line, microphone, and tape inputs.
Technical construction includes two cassette mechanisms, each fitted with one Sendust record/playback head and one ferrite erase head, driven by 2 x 2 DC servo motors.
Technical specifications include tape speed of 4.8 cm/s, wow and flutter of 0.08% WRMS, frequency response of 20 Hz to 15 kHz with normal tape, and up to 20 Hz to 17 kHz with CrO2 or Ferrochrome tape.
Additional specifications include signal-to-noise ratio of 53 dB without Dolby and 61 dB with Dolby B, distortion factor of 2%, line input 400 mV / 50 kOhm, line output 400 mV / 5.6 kOhm, DIN line output 2.25 mV / 10 kOhm, and headphone output 0.3 mW at 8 Ohm.
