One of its most interesting features is the choice of two tape speeds: standard 4.75 cm/s and high-speed 9.5 cm/s. The higher speed offers greater recording potential while reducing the available recording time by half. Recordings must be played back at the speed at which they were made.

The transport incorporates two motors with servo control and a Sendust alloy recording/playback head. Electronic transport buttons provide convenient access to rewind, stop, fast-forward, play, pause and recording.

The tape selector accommodates normal ferric, chromium dioxide, ferrichrome and metal tapes. A front-panel fine bias adjustment allows recording characteristics to be tailored to the tape being used.

Dolby noise reduction helps reduce tape hiss with compatible recordings, while the selectable MPX filter is useful when recording FM broadcasts. Separate microphone and line recording controls offer flexibility when setting recording levels.

The Compudeck control section includes electronic programming, counter memory and timer-related functions. Its combination of digital controls and analogue recording technology makes the SD8000 an interesting model for vintage cassette enthusiasts.

The front panel features separate left and right peak-level displays, a digital display, microphone inputs, a headphone socket and an adjustable output level. Rear connections include RCA line inputs and outputs, a DIN recording/playback socket and a remote-control connection.

The manufacturer’s published frequency response varies with tape formulation and speed. At the standard 4.75 cm/s speed, it is 25 Hz–16 kHz with normal tape, 25 Hz–17.5 kHz with chrome, 25 Hz–18 kHz with ferrichrome and 25 Hz–18.5 kHz with metal tape. At 9.5 cm/s, these ranges extend to 25 Hz–18.5 kHz, 25 Hz–19 kHz, 25 Hz–19.5 kHz and 25 Hz–20.5 kHz respectively.

Published dimensions for the cassette deck are approximately 416 × 146 × 243 mm (W × H × D), with a published weight of 9.1 kg. These figures refer to the deck itself; the additional wooden cabinet shown in the photographs increases the overall dimensions and weight.
