Extremely rare AIWA AF-5050 Stereo Cassette Music System, manufactured in Japan and introduced around 1977. This impressive all-in-one vintage Hi-Fi centre combines a fully automatic turntable, Dolby cassette recorder, four-band radio tuner and stereo amplifier in one substantial, beautifully engineered unit.

The AF-5050 was one of AIWA’s most ambitious music centres of the period, originally positioned well above ordinary compact systems. Its brushed-aluminium front panel, wood-effect cabinet, illuminated analogue dial, recording meters and large smoked dust cover create the unmistakable appearance of premium Japanese audio equipment from the 1970s.

The belt-driven automatic turntable uses a four-pole synchronous motor and provides 33⅓ and 45 rpm speeds. It features an oil-damped tonearm lift, automatic return, automatic stop, moving-magnet cartridge, approximately 0.1% WRMS wow and flutter, a 45 dB signal-to-noise ratio and a recommended tracking force of 2–2.5 grams.

The integrated stereo cassette recorder offers recording and playback, Dolby Noise Reduction, separate VU meters, Cue/Review, pause and tape-type selection. Its specified frequency response is 30 Hz–12,000 Hz with normal tape and up to 30 Hz–16,000 Hz with Fe-Cr or CrO₂ tape, with approximately 0.1% WRMS wow and flutter.

The analogue superheterodyne tuner receives FM, MW, SW and LW broadcasts. Its ranges are 87.5–108 MHz FM, 525–1,605 kHz MW, 5.9–16 MHz SW and 150–340 kHz LW. The FM section provides 2.5 µV sensitivity, 20 Hz–15,000 Hz frequency response, a 62 dB signal-to-noise ratio and more than 38 dB stereo separation at 1 kHz.

The pure complementary SEPP OTL stereo amplifier delivers 2 × 12 watts continuous into 8 ohms or 2 × 17 watts into 4 ohms at 1 kHz and 1% distortion. Music power is rated at 2 × 20 watts into 8 ohms or 2 × 25 watts into 4 ohms, providing more than sufficient output for efficient vintage loudspeakers.

Front-panel facilities include sliding controls for bass, treble, balance and volume, together with Loudness, stereo/mono and muting functions. Connections are provided for stereo microphones, headphones, external tape equipment and auxiliary sources, while the rear panel includes FM and AM antenna terminals, a DIN tape connection and outputs for 4–8-ohm external loudspeakers.

The AF-5050 measures approximately 590 mm wide, 160 mm high and 430 mm deep with the dust cover closed, and weighs approximately 13.5 kg. Its substantial construction incorporates six integrated circuits, 47 transistors, one FET, 22 diodes and three LEDs.

This European version is configured for direct operation from 220–230 volts AC at 50 Hz. Because the turntable uses a synchronous motor, operation in a 60 Hz country requires the corresponding motor pulley and correct technical adjustment; please contact us before purchasing if the unit will be used outside a 50 Hz region.
